"It is really too bad that this landscape painter, who possesses such a true, such a just, and such a natural feeling, is satisfied by an impression ... Each object is indicated by an apparent or real contour, but the landscapes of M. Daubigny offer merely spots of color juxtaposed." - Theophile Gautier

"Coucher de Soleil"

Charles-Francois Daubigny (1817 - 1878)

The first of the great "plein aire" painters and one of the key figures associated with the 'Barbizon School', Daubigny was highly influential in connecting the work of the landscape masters of his own generation and the impressionists and their contemporaries. Of all the landscape painters of the period, except Boudin, Daubigny seems to be the only one who worked directly from nature in order to capture the everly changing light that illuminated his favorite subjects. This beautifuly rich and sumptuous impressionist landscape depicting a wonderful sunset is signed and dated lower left: 'Daubigny 1865'. It is framed in an ornate gilded period frame.

"Barbizon Riverside" Jacques-Henri Delpy

In the tradition of Daubigny and the other great barbizon painters, JACQUES HENRI DELPY was a talented late 19th century French artist, known for his detailed paintings of genre, landscapes, villages, rivers, lakes, fishermen, and boats. Here he depicts the exquiste evening light of a sky with wisps of clouds, reflected in the River Oise and illuminating the riverside farm.

"Riverside Farm" by Howard Leeds, American, c.1918

Howard Leeds was an American artist who was influenced by the Barbizon school . His painting (ca. 1918) is a large impressionist oil of a river meandering through the French countryside, similar in subject and style to the classic works of Daubigny, Delpy and other French artists who often painted river scenes like this in evening light from a floating studio.

19th century Barbizon landscape

Although unsigned, this painting is clearly the work of a talented late 19th century artist working in the Barbizon style of Troyon or Daubigny. In the center of a lush, wet landscape, are grazing cattle with a lake in the background and above it all a wonderful sky full of towering clouds.

Forest Path by Le Gallez

A large 19th century forest landscape with figure in the Barbizon style. This painting is reminiscent of the work of Corot, Courbet or Millet, depicting peasant life in the village of Barbizon and the surrounding fields and forests of Fontainebleau.

French landscape, ca. 1890

19th century French Oil Painting on board (13.75 inches x 10 inches), of a bridge crossing a forest river at sunset. Signed with the initials FV. The artist demonstrates considerable talent in mixing colors, light and texture in this highly romantic view of the French countryside

.

"Veille Rue, pres de la Seine"

by Luc Tullat (French b. 1895)

These two early 20th century works by Luc Tullat appear to be painted "en plein aire" capturing the authenticity of the village of Andresy on the Seine northwest of Paris, and a typical hilltop village in the South of France, possibly in the Luberon.

"Village dans le Plaine"

by Luc Tullat (French b. 1895)

Vaucluse Evening Light

By Marie-Paul Cazaux

FRENCH MOUNTAIN SUNSET

By Marie-Paul Cazaux

Two Superb Oil Paintings on canvas board complete our Tour. Each is by contemporary French artist Marie-Paul Cazaux of the environs near her home in Vaucluse, France, of the autumn sunset over the mountains in the fields behind her studio. The fresh, crisp, pure color of the sky is the light of a late October day unique to Vaucluse at this time of year. Each is signed by the artist on the front and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity on the back.

For sizes/prices of these and other works in this exhibition please see the "paintings and artists" section of the site under European paintings. Better still, stop by and visit the gallery during the Tour de France or for the opening wine and cheese reception on on Sunday, July 3rd, 5-7 pm.
